The garden in May

Things to do in the garden in May:

  • Deadhead daffodils and tulips
  • Water the new plants in dry periods
  • Give the rhododendron some fertilizer
  • Buy annuals for the containers and among the perennials
  • It is not too late to establish a kitchen garden – carrot seeds can be put in the ground now
  • A hammock in the garden is a good investment

Japanese cherry tree

The garden’s old cherry tree is blooming in May with large pink flowers. The brown berries, which come later, do not taste very nice. We believe it must be a Japanese cherry tree (Prunus serrulata) – all the Japanese cherries growing in Denmark have been cultivated on a stem of Prunus avium.

Beech hedge

The European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is grown primarily for its wonderful foliage of delicate leaves, in spring, a powerful light green, then darker green over summer and, finally, bronze in autumn.

Rhododendron ’Cunninghams white’

'Cunninghams White' is a very popular rhododendron cultivar. It is a large, evergreen shrub with oval, leathery leaves. The most important characteristic is that the buds are pink just before they bloom in the middle of May. Afterwards they become large white flowers with a subtle light yellow drawing.

Some of the buds died and became dry and brown. They were easily broken off – it is not fungus that makes the buds dark and difficult to break off. If there is reason to suspect fungus, which is transferred by the Rhododendron leafhopper (Graphocephala fennahi), the buds must be removed at once and thrown in the garbage disposal. Do not throw them on the ground or put them in with the compost.

White Bleeding heart

‘Alba' is the white flowered cultivar of the common bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis) which has been a popular garden favourite for many years. It blooms in spring and thrives in the shadow, thus making it a perfect perennial in a north side flowerbed.

Fragrant Burkwood viburnum

Viburnum burkwoodii is a popular semi-evergreen hybrid. The white flowers in May are nicely fragrant. The flowerbuds are pink and the leather-like foliage is dark green.

Tulips

There are many different kinds of tulips in the garden. It is recommended to cut the flower off, once the flower leaves drop off and let the green leaves wither away. Thus the tulip will produce new bulbs rather than seed itself.
