Sundial
A functional focus point in the garden
A sundial is an ancient clock. The sundial measures time by the position of the sun. As the sun moves across the sky, the shadow-edge progressively aligns with different hour-lines on the device. If properly placed, the sundial can tell time more accurately than most modern watches.

Sundial on the lawn
However, sundials can also be purely decorative, and make beautiful additions to the garden as décor.
When we overtook the garden, the previous owners left the sundial in the middle of the sloping lawn. We have moved it to the new berry garden, where it is surrounded by shrubs of black, red and white currants and gooseberries. Around the sundial we will plant violets.
